*Cue Flashback*
It's the 2nd week of summer vacation. I'm still all wound up from final exams, unable to relax and act like a normal person again. Nursing school takes a hard toll on your brain, and by finals you are stressed out, bitter towards the universe, and stuffed to the brim with facts. My mom makes a futile attempt to soothe my aching brain with a small shopping trip, and we head to one of our favorite antique shops. On the way, we- by chance- stop into a LYS called In The Loop. Browsing around, we notice they offer classes for beginners to experts. My mom nudges me. Hey, you should take lessons! That would be a good activity for you to learn through the summer! Hesitantly, I nod yes, yes this could be a good idea...
*End flashback*
Once a week, on tuesdays, I head over to In The Loop to learn how to knit. I'm signed up for 5 lessons, and am going to blog about the experience of learning how to knit, showing off my finished objects, new techniques, and supplies I gather up. This is documentation of my successes, fails, and stories while learning a new skill as a 20 year old college student.

I'm in the honors nursing program. It's 4 years of undergrad work and then I'll have my BSN. I'm focused, determined, and honest. I'm a perfectionist and spend 90% of my time in class and studying. I have friends, I'm in a sorority, but I don't spend much time participating in college activities. I'm lucky if I get to go to the gym or out to eat each week. Thanksgiving, Spring, and Summer breaks are the only time I get to unwind and be free. I'm no longer trapped in my room, memorizing information for exams and clinical. Knitting is something I hope to take back to school with me as a stress reliever.
I spend more time searching for free e-books online than I do reading them on my kindle. My sense of direction (GPS style, not in life!) is heinous. I'm an atheist interested in philosophy and psychology. I have a mom (my best friend), a dad, a sister, a boyfriend (of 4 years), and a dog (that I am allergic to). I'm a hard-working and I relate more to adults than people my own age. I can't wait to graduate and start living in the real world.
Wow! Congrats on being a nursing student. I work every semester in my college bookstore, and those books scare me! I graduate in December with my psychology degree. I had to comment on your post, because I have a cat that I'm allergic to, so you having a dog that your allergic to made me laugh. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! That must be a nice job, I hope they give you discounts! I've been offered a work-study position in the nursing lab and can't wait to start in the fall. What do you plan on doing after graduation? Grad school perhaps?
ReplyDeleteMy dog is SUPER CUTE (I'll post a picture to prove it) but she hates me because I never pet her. We didn't know I was allergic to dogs until we brought her home, and by then it was too late...so they moved me to the basement! Whatever. I have my own bachelorette pad down here.

ReplyDeleteI graduated with my BSN in 2008 and while in nursing school, learned to knit as a stress reliever. I've been a nurse for 2.5 years and absolutely looooove it! My husband and I got married a year ago, but have been together for 8.5 years now. I have a dog, who lives back at my family house with my dad since I've become allergic to her! Plus, she got sad living in our apartment, missing out on the large yard and my sister's dog who kept her company at my dad's. I always thought I was a childless 30something year old mom trapped in an early 20something year old's body. I nannied throughout nursing school and always got along with the parents that I worked for.
Continue working hard in nursing school and soon you'll join the real world. Don't be in too much of a rush though - enjoy all the steps along the way because you'll never get them back. ReplyDeleteIt's so hard to enjoy school as its happening. My mom said nursing school was the best 4 years of her life but you don't realize it until its over. I get so sick of the constant studying and I don't have time to do anything else. I love going home on the weekends because I feel like I can breathe again- how can this be enjoyable?! Maybe I'll feel different when its over...do you?
